Newcastle University
Rhodar was appointed as lead contractor on Newcastle University’s Fire Protection framework, to undertake necessary fire-stopping installations and repairs within occupied university buildings.
The university’s 50-acre campus is located in the city centre, with many buildings which vary in age and construction, including several listed buildings. In addition to campus buildings, works were also carried out in both occupied and unoccupied residential dwellings, situated on the outskirts of the campus.
Works initially involved surveying over 30 buildings, including accommodation blocks, lecture theatres, science labs and other academic buildings – identifying a range of required fire stopping enhancements and reinstatement works.
We’ve since been working closely with the University’s Estates Team to develop and implement a comprehensive installation programme, specifically designed to minimise disruption to the day-to-day operations by planning our works out of hours and during holiday periods.
The university stipulated that noisy work must be undertaken outside core hours. We updated our programme and resources to accommodate this, for example, at Merz Court we placed operatives on a night shift to ensure no disruption to university staff, students, and other stakeholders.
