Rhodar progressing demolition works at former primary school

Rhodar’s demolition works at the former Riverside Primary School in Livingston are progressing well.

The school, built in 1965, contained reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in its roofing, which had reached the end of its lifespan. The building was closed in 2023, and plans were made to prepare the site for a new school.

Rhodar was appointed by West Lothian Council in March as Principal Contractor, initially to carry out a full asbestos removal programme and temporary works. However, due to the accelerated deterioration of sections containing RAAC and a heightened risk of collapse, our in-situ team was tasked with demolishing these parts of the school.

As work began, it was decided for safety reasons to extend the demolition across the full site. The project is now set to be completed by the end of September.

The works have generated significant interest from the local community, with many former pupils and residents stopping by to watch the progress, sharing memories of their time at the school.
